Cave Story + is a fun sidescrolling shooter with a great storyline, lovable characters, Megaman style gameplay, and plenty of hidden secrets for those wanting a little something extra. It feels like the world of Metroid got combined with the gameplay of Mega Man and the storyline of a Final Fantasy game. It's story revolves around an amnesiac robot who starts out in a cave in the middle of a floating island. After a bit of exploring, he meets some of the island's inhabitants, which are composed of talking bunny people called "Mimiga". It is quickly learned that some evil person called Doctor, and his lackeys Balrog, a weird talking monster that looks like a giant toaster and talks like Kool-Aid man (OH YEAH!), and Misery, a powerful witch, are kidnapping and killing Mimiga for some reason. It is up to you to find out why and find out the other mysteries of this mysterious floating island. It's a really fun game, giving you plenty of useful weapons to fight enemies with,anywhere from a machine gun that can be used as a jetpack when shooting downwards to a gun that creats a shield of bubbles all around you and when fired turns them into razorblades. Consequently, killing enemies feels very rewarding. The game has 3 challenge levels, easy, normal, and hard, and all of which offer a bit of challenge, however hard is truly horrificly difficult, as this is a hard game that mimics games of the SNES era of video games. The music is also very good and catchy, and successfully utilizes the music to fit moods quite well, from a fast paced, frenetic, and fun song for a secret level in the game to a sad, quiet, and dismal sort of music after a sad event in the game. The game Cave Story + is cheap and very accessible, however for those who are broke the original freeware version of the game called simply "Cave Story", can be found online, and a link will be posted to the site where you can get it below. Check it out, it's a pretty fun game!
